Eating Disorders are the deadliest of all mental illnesses. In the US, one person dies from an eating disorder every hour. Many of these deaths are from suicide.
Alarmingly, up to 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men in the U.S. will develop an eating disorder by age 40, and 1 in 2 people with an eating disorder will think about ending their life. About 1 in 4 people with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa will attempt to kill themselves. And those with anorexia have a risk of death by suicide 31 times higher than peers without the disorder.
In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of the complexities facing a student with an eating disorder. These students may be physically, emotionally, and spiritually fragile. One of the challenges that experienced yoga teachers seeking to provide appropriate support for the individual is that each afflicted student has unique needs.
Workshop participants will learn how to work with yoga to reduce anxiety, depression, and general eating disorder symptoms. They will learn the importance of integrating a trauma-informed approach and develop an understanding of which category of asana and pranayama are contradicted for individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating and which are safe and beneficial. They will also develop an understanding of the risks of excessive physical strain and bone density fragility.
